STATPack™ History
About the STATPack™ Project
Development of STATPack™ began in 2002 in response to anthrax and bioterrorism scares facing the nation. At the time, potentially hazardous substances often needed to be manually transported between laboratories so that they could be accurately identified. The STATPack™ project focuses on researching, evaluating and implementing technical solutions for a public health emergency response information system that is affordable, robust, secure and usable. We have overcome the barriers to entry in supporting rural healthcare. The research project has made a direct positive impact on the quality of life for rural citizens in delivering timely microbiology consultations. The STATPack™ system supports various microscopes and cameras which are utilized in order to transmit high-resolution images of substances between laboratories digitally and to create a centralized repository of information regarding potential hazards, removing much of the cost and risk of transportation while enabling real-time feedback.
The STATPack™ system is presently in use in 50 rural and metropolitan hospital laboratories across Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Not only do these systems communicate within their own state networks, they now share important public health information across state lines. The project has received nearly two million dollars in funding via state and federal grants and development continues in order to refine and adapt the system to meet evolving requirements. Future goals include developing a more light-weight and mobile version of the system as well as enabling the system to function wirelessly within a laboratory hood.
